Jigsaw Puzzle ― How to Play, Tips, and Choosing a Piece Count
Pick up one scattered piece at a time and find where it fits against its neighbour. The joined cluster grows little by little, and the last piece completes the picture. A jigsaw puzzle has no opponent and no clock to beat; it is a quiet way to lose yourself for a while. This version is set on a white desk in a bright atelier and offers 10 pictures and four piece counts (three on phones). Your progress is saved when you stop, so you can take breaks and still finish a 150-piece puzzle at your own pace.
What you can do in this game
- 10 pictures: Lighthouse Meadow, Autumn Lake, Cat in the Window, Playful Pandas, Flower Street, Cherry Garden, Space Voyage, Steam Train, Balloon Morning and Coral Reef, all drawn for this site.
- Piece counts: 24 / 48 / 96 / 150 on PC, 12 / 24 / 48 on phones (sized so that a fingertip can still grab a piece).
- Assembly like the real thing: pieces snap only to their neighbours. Dropping a piece on its correct spot on the board does nothing, so you cannot find positions by trial and error.
- Helpers: a picture preview (while you hold the button), an edges-only tray, and a tidy-up button.
- Auto-save: your progress is saved automatically and "Continue" on the title screen resumes it.
- Best times: the five fastest times for each picture and piece count are kept with the date.
The screen
| Element | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Board | The frame on the left (top on phones). It only shows the finished size; you can build inside or outside it |
| Tray | The piece holder on the right (bottom on phones) with the pieces you have not used yet. Drag an empty spot or use the mouse wheel to scroll |
| Time | Elapsed time. Your finishing time is recorded |
| Joined | How many pieces are joined to a neighbour. A piece placed on its own does not count |
| Helper buttons | Picture, Edges and Tidy Up. The "?" at the top right opens the rules |
How to play
- Press "Start" on the title screen, choose a picture and a piece count, then "Start Game".
- Drag a piece out of the tray and drop it near the board.
- Bring two neighbouring pieces together in the right position and release: they click together. Joined pieces move as one cluster.
- Clusters join each other the same way.
- When every piece is in one cluster the puzzle is complete. The cluster slides onto the board and your time is shown.
Drop a piece on the tray to put it back (a joined cluster returns as separate pieces).
Controls
PC: drag the pieces with the mouse. Scroll the tray by dragging an empty spot or with the mouse wheel.
Mobile: touch a piece and drag it. Swipe the tray sideways to scroll; drag a piece towards the board to pick it up.
Helpers
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Picture | While held, overlays the finished picture on the board (press and hold on phones). Useful for checking where a piece belongs |
| Edges | Shows only the edge pieces (those with a flat side) in the tray. Press again ("Show All") to bring the rest back |
| Tidy Up | Packs the tray pieces from the start again when it has become hard to search |
Helpers do not disqualify you from the best-time list, so use them freely.
Tips
1. Build the frame first
Press "Edges" to see only the pieces with a flat side. Find the four corners (two flat sides each) and join the edges by colour. The frame tells you the size and orientation of the picture.
2. Sort by colour and pattern
Put pieces of the same colour, such as sky, sea or grass, together outside the board. Within a colour, look for patterns that continue across the cut: the outline of a cloud, the streaks of a wave.
3. Grow clusters off the board
In this game pieces join anywhere, not only inside the frame. Assemble the eye-catching parts first (the lighthouse, the boat, the animals) and carry the finished clusters into the frame.
4. Hold "Picture" when stuck
When you cannot tell where a piece goes, hold the Picture button and compare colours and shapes. The time counts, but it is faster than puzzling over it.
5. Step up the piece count
Start a new picture at 24 pieces to learn its layout, then try 48 and 96. The same picture plays very differently, and best times are kept per picture and piece count, so you can chase your own record under the same conditions.
Saving and resuming
Progress is saved automatically, one save per picture and piece count. "Continue" on the title screen resumes the puzzle you played last, and choosing the same picture and piece count on the setup screen shows a "Continue" button too. Starting the same picture and count again replaces the save (you will be asked first).
A little history
Jigsaw puzzles began in the 1760s in England as teaching aids: maps glued to wooden boards and cut apart along the borders of countries. The name comes from the jigsaw, the fine saw later used to cut boards into curved pieces. Cardboard pieces spread in the twentieth century, and today puzzles from a few dozen to several thousand pieces are enjoyed all over the world. This game keeps the feel of the real thing, where pieces join only when they truly fit their neighbours. Try a 24-piece picture first and enjoy the moment the last piece drops in.
