Gomoku ― How to Play, Rules, and Tips to Win
Two players take turns placing black and white stones, and the first to line up five wins. You can learn the rules in thirty seconds, but the reading battle runs deep. Play Gomoku right here on this page.
What you can do in this game
- Play against the CPU: ten difficulty levels. Choose "Auto" and the level goes up when you win and down when you lose, so you always get a well-matched opponent.
- Two players: take turns on one screen with someone sitting next to you.
- Online play: play with friends or family who are far away. Create a private room with a passphrase to play only with people you know.
Basic rules
- The board has 15 × 15 intersections. Black moves first, and players take turns placing one stone at a time.
- Line up five of your stones in a row, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and you win.
- Stones never move once placed, and they are never captured.
- If the board fills up with no winner, the game is a draw.
To play, just click (or tap) the intersection where you want to place a stone. The most recent stone is marked in red, so you never lose track of your opponent's last move. Against the CPU, "Undo" takes back your last move.
Forbidden moves (Renju rules)
In Gomoku the first player, Black, has a clear advantage. Renju is a rule set created to reduce that advantage by restricting Black only. Before a game, you can choose one of these options.
| Setting | What it means |
|---|---|
| None | No restrictions. A row of six or more (an "overline") also wins. Good for a casual game. |
| Renju rules | Black may not play a double-three, a double-four, or an overline. Those points are marked with an X. White has no restrictions. |
- Double-three: one move that creates two open threes at once (an open three is a row of three that can become an unstoppable four).
- Double-four: one move that creates two fours at once (a four is one move away from five).
- Overline: a row of six or more stones.
Under Renju rules, White can even try to lure Black into a forbidden point. Give it a try once you are comfortable with the basics.
Tips to win
1. Learn the "three" and the "four"
A row of three with both ends open will become a four with both ends open, and that cannot be stopped. Block your opponent's open three as soon as it appears. When your opponent makes a four with one open end, you must block that end.
2. Aim for the four-three
A four-three is a single move that makes a four and an open three at the same time. Your opponent has to block the four, and then your three becomes an unstoppable four. Most Gomoku games are decided this way, and it is a legal winning pattern for Black even under Renju rules.
3. Play near the center and keep your stones connected
Near the edges there are fewer directions in which you can make five. In the opening, play around the center and place stones where they relate to each other along rows, columns, and diagonals. That makes a four-three much easier to build later.
4. Defend and attack with the same move
When you block a three, look for a blocking move that also extends your own stones. If you only block, sooner or later you will run out of answers.
5. Start with "Auto"
With "Auto", the CPU level moves by one after each win or loss. The level where you win some and lose some is your current strength. Aim to beat the next level consistently, and you will feel yourself improving.
How to play online
- Choose "Online Play" on the title screen and pick a player name (3-12 characters).
- Choose "Create Room", then set the time limit (20, 30, or 40 seconds per move) and the forbidden-move option.
- To play with a friend, make the room private, set a passphrase, and share it. Private rooms can also be played with no time limit.
- The game starts when your opponent joins. Who moves first is decided at random, and the players swap for a rematch.
A little history
Gomoku has long been played in Japan with a Go board and Go stones. In the Meiji era it was given the name "Renju", and competitive rules with forbidden moves for Black were developed over the following decades to balance the first-player advantage. Today Renju has its own world championship, and the game is played around the world under the names Gomoku and Renju.
