Wagashi Match ― How to Play, Scoring, and High-Score Tips
Sakura mochi, matcha dango, dorayaki, mame daifuku, kuri kinton, and mizu yokan. Swap colorful Japanese sweets (wagashi) and line up three of the same kind to clear them in this Japanese-style match-3 puzzle. You get 30 moves. Use chains and special pieces well, and aim for a high score.
How to play
- The board is 8 × 8, filled with six kinds of sweets.
- Swap two sweets that are next to each other. You can drag, or click (tap) one and then the other.
- When three or more of the same sweet line up in a row or column, they are cleared and you score points.
- Sweets above fall down into the gaps, and new sweets drop in from the top.
- The game ends when you have used all 30 moves.
A swap that does not make a match is undone and does not cost a move. If no moves are left on the board, it is shuffled automatically (this does not cost a move either).
Scoring
| Clear | Points |
|---|---|
| 3 in a row | 30 |
| 4 in a row | 60 |
| 5 or more | 100 |
| Firing a line piece | 50 bonus + 10 for each sweet cleared |
| Firing a cross piece | 100 bonus + 10 for each sweet cleared |
When falling sweets make a new match, that is a "chain". The second step of a chain scores double and the third scores triple, and so on, so chains are the key to a high score.
Special pieces
- Line piece (arrow mark): created when you clear four of the same sweet. Match it and it clears the entire row or column in the direction of the arrow.
- Cross piece (cross mark): created when you clear five or more at once. It appears not only for five in a straight line but also for L and T shapes. When matched, it clears both its row and its column at once.
Tips for a high score
1. Clear near the bottom
Clearing near the bottom makes many sweets above it fall and shift, which makes chains more likely. Clearing near the top moves only a few pieces. When in doubt, go low.
2. Look for four and five, not just three
With the same single move, a match of four gives you a line piece and five or more gives you a cross piece. Even when an easy match of three is in sight, take a breath and check whether a match of four is one move away nearby.
3. Fire special pieces where they catch the most
Line and cross pieces score for every sweet they clear, and they shake up the board, which often starts a chain. Fire them along crowded rows and columns, or where they can catch another special piece.
4. Think in L and T shapes
You do not need five in a straight line to make a cross piece. A column of three and a row of three that meet at a corner or in the middle (an L or T shape) also count as five. Look for places where lines are about to cross.
5. Do not waste moves
Your score is the total of 30 moves. Instead of clearing something just because you can, get in the habit of choosing the move that pays the most. Your scores will grow steadily.

About wagashi
The sweets in this game have all been loved in Japan for a very long time. Wagashi are closely tied to the seasons: sakura mochi for spring, mizu yokan for summer, kuri kinton for autumn. Dorayaki is said to be named after the "dora", a gong, because of its round shape. Yokan began as a dish that came from China and changed in Japan into a sweet made with red beans and agar.
