Ludo ― How to Play, Rules, and Winning Tips
Roll the die, move a piece, and bump your opponents back to where they started. Ludo is a race game for 2 to 4 players that families in Britain and around the world have played for generations. You can learn it in a few minutes, yet choosing which piece to move decides who wins, so children and adults can enjoy the same board together.
What you can do in this game
- VS CPU: play with 2 to 4 players. The CPU has three strengths: Easy, Normal, and Hard.
- Play Together: 2 to 4 people take turns on one screen. CPU players can fill in if you are short of people.
- Online Play: play with friends or family who are far away, 2 to 4 players. CPUs take the empty seats, so two people are enough to start a four-player game.
- Number of pieces: four each (standard) or two each (a quick game).
The board
| Area | What it is |
|---|---|
| Yard | The large coloured corner. Your pieces begin here and return here when captured |
| Start square | The square of your colour marked with a star. A piece leaving the Yard is placed here |
| Track | The path of white squares around the board (52 squares). Everyone moves clockwise |
| Home column | Five squares of your colour leading to the centre, entered from the arrow square. Opponents cannot enter |
| Home | The triangle in the centre. A piece that reaches it has finished |
Basic rules
- On your turn, roll the die once and move one of your pieces that many squares.
- A piece in the Yard can come out onto the Start square only when you roll a 6.
- A 6 gives you another roll.
- If you land on a square holding a single enemy piece, you capture it and it goes back to its Yard.
- Two or more pieces of the same colour on one square form a block. Opponents cannot land on it or pass it.
- After one lap, a piece turns into its own Home column. You need the exact number to reach Home (with 3 squares left, you need a 3).
- If you can move a piece, you must. If you cannot, your turn is skipped.
- The first player to bring all of their pieces Home wins.
These are the rules commonly played in Britain. The only places where a piece cannot be captured are the Yard, the Home column, and inside a block. Blocks can be turned off in the room settings.
Controls
Click (tap) the die to roll. The pieces that can move will bounce, so choose the one you want. If only one piece can move, it moves automatically.
Winning tips
1. Bring a new piece out when you roll a 6
With only one piece on the board, you have no choices to make. Use a 6 to bring out another piece and give yourself options. It also helps you recover quickly after a capture.
2. Watch the six squares behind you
You are captured when an enemy piece coming from behind lands exactly on your square. The squares 1 to 6 ahead of an enemy piece are the danger zone. Before you move, check that your piece will end up at least 7 squares clear.
3. Do not linger on an opponent's Start square
When an opponent rolls a 6, a piece comes out of their Yard onto their Start square. A single piece of yours sitting there is captured. Pass the starred squares, and the few squares after them, as quickly as you can.
4. Block the road
Stack two pieces on one square and opponents cannot get past. A block just beyond an opponent's Start square can hold their pieces back for a long time. But your blocking pieces are not advancing either, so choose your moment to break it up.
5. Capture when you can
A captured piece has to wait for another 6 before it can even start again. Capturing a piece that is close to finishing makes the biggest difference.
6. Run for the Home column
A piece in the Home column can no longer be captured. If an opponent is chasing you near the end of the lap, get inside before doing anything else. Then move your other pieces while you wait for the exact number.
How to play online
- Choose "Online Play" on the title screen and pick a player name (3 to 12 characters).
- Choose "Create Room" and set the number of players (2 to 4), the number of pieces, blocks on or off, and the time limit per turn (20, 30, or 40 seconds).
- To play with friends, make the room "Private", set a passphrase, and share it. Private rooms can also have no time limit.
- The person who created the room can start the game at any time. CPUs take the empty seats, so you can play alone while you wait for your friends.
- Anyone who arrives during a game waits in the room, watching the progress, and joins from the next game.
- If someone leaves during a game, a CPU takes over their seat and the game continues.
A little history
Ludo comes from Pachisi, a game played on a cross-shaped board in India for centuries. A simplified version using a single die went on sale in England at the end of the 19th century under the name "Ludo", which is Latin for "I play". It has relatives all over the world, including "Mensch ärgere Dich nicht" in Germany, Parcheesi in the United States, and Parchís in Spain.
