Yacht ― How to Play, Rules, and Tips
Roll five dice, keep the ones you like, and roll the rest again. Then write the result into one of 12 categories such as Ones, Full House or Yacht, and race for the highest total. Yacht is famous among dice games for being more than luck: which dice to keep, which category to fill, and when to give one up for a zero all add up over twelve rounds. This version is set on a cafe table by the harbor and offers four ways to play: chase your own best score, take turns on one device, play the CPU, or meet friends online.
What you can do in this game
- Solo: a 12-round score attack. Your five best scores are saved with the date.
- Pass & Play: 2 to 4 players take turns on one device. Each player has their own column, so no paper or pencil is needed.
- VS CPU: 1 to 3 CPU players at levels 1 to 10, plus "Auto", which goes up when you win and down when you lose. Your record is kept per level.
- Online Play: 2 to 4 players. Empty seats are filled by the CPU, so you can start alone. You watch the other players' rerolls on your own screen.
- Score preview: empty cells show in grey what the current dice would score there, so you can learn the categories as you play.
The screen
| Element | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Score sheet | The table on the left (top on phones): 12 categories plus "Upper / Bonus" and "Total", one column per player. The current player's name is highlighted in yellow |
| Dice | Five dice. A kept die moves down a little and gets a frame |
| Rolls left | Under the dice. "Rolls left: 2" means two more rerolls this turn |
| "Roll" button | Rerolls only the dice you have not kept. It is disabled when no rerolls remain |
| Score preview | The grey numbers in empty cells: what the current dice would score in that category. Zero is shown dimmer |
| Buttons | "Back to Title" (in online play, "Back to Room" or "Leave"). The "?" at the top right opens the rules |
Basic rules
- A turn: the first roll happens automatically. Click the dice you want to keep and press "Roll" to reroll the others. You may reroll up to twice per turn (three rolls in all), and you may score before using them all.
- Scoring: when you are done rolling, choose one empty category and write in the score. Then the next player goes.
- Scoring zero: if the dice fit nothing, write a zero in any empty category. That category is used up.
- The end: the game ends when all 12 categories are filled (12 rounds). The highest total wins; ties are shared.
Categories and scores
| Category | Dice | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Ones to Sixes (upper section) | Count the dice showing that number | Face value times count (three 3s = 9) |
| Bonus | Upper section total of 63 or more | +35 |
| Choice | Anything | Sum of all five dice |
| Four of a Kind | Four or more alike | Sum of all five dice |
| Full House | Three alike plus two alike (five alike also counts) | Sum of all five dice |
| Small Straight | Four in a row (1234, 2345, 3456) | 15 |
| Large Straight | Five in a row (12345, 23456) | 30 |
| Yacht | All five alike | 50 |
63 in the upper section is exactly three of each number. The bonus is added the moment your upper total reaches 63. The theoretical maximum for a game is 375, but even strong players average around 200.
Controls
PC: click a die to keep it, and click again to release it. "Roll" rerolls the other dice, and clicking a cell on the score sheet scores there.
Mobile: same as PC. Tap the dice to keep them, tap "Roll", then tap a cell on the score sheet.
Scoring is immediate when you press a cell. You are asked to confirm only when the score would be zero, so a mistap cannot throw away a high-scoring category.
Tips
1. Put the upper bonus first
The 35-point bonus is worth more than a Large Straight. The target is three of each number. Writing four 4s, 5s or 6s builds a cushion, so that a short Ones or Twos still gets you there. Early in the game, three or more 5s or 6s are usually better spent on the upper section than on a long shot at Yacht.
2. Keep the most common number
The basic reroll plan is to grow a matching set. With a pair, keep the pair; with three alike, keep the three and roll the rest. It feeds Four of a Kind, Full House, Yacht and the upper section all at once, so it is rarely wrong.
3. Straights: lock in at four
A Small Straight (15) only needs four in a row such as 1234 or 2345. With 2345 you can chase the Large Straight (30) by rolling the last die for a 1 or a 6, but that is a one-in-three shot per reroll. With few rolls left, taking the Small Straight is usually the better deal.
4. Save Choice for an emergency
Choice scores the sum of any dice. Use it early and you may be forced into a zero at the end when nothing fits. The ideal time is a high roll (lots of 5s and 6s) that forms no other category; until then, keep it in reserve.
5. Sacrifice Ones or Yacht
When you must write a zero, pick the category with the least to lose: Ones (five points at most) or, late in the game, Yacht (rare anyway). Choice and Four of a Kind are good escape routes near the end, so hold on to them as long as you can.
6. Try the Auto level
The CPU evaluates all 32 ways to keep dice and all 252 possible rolls, and picks the play with the highest expected score. High levels look ahead through both rerolls; low levels make noisier choices. Start with "Auto" and the level follows your results, so you always have a fair opponent. Level 10 averages about 185 points per game. Beat that and you are doing very well.
Online play
- Choose "Online Play" on the title screen and pick a player name (3 to 12 characters).
- "Create Room" lets you set the number of seats (2 to 4) and the time per turn (30 or 60 seconds). A private room takes a passcode so only friends can join (and may have no time limit).
- The room owner presses "Start Game". Empty seats are filled by the CPU, so a game can start with one, two or three people.
- On your turn, the clock runs from the first roll until you score. If time runs out, the CPU scores your current dice for you.
- If a player leaves, the CPU takes over their seat and the game continues. Anyone who joins during a game can play from the next one.
A little history
The five-dice game called Yacht spread in the United States in the 1930s, and the name is said to come from people playing it to pass the time aboard yachts. Categories and scores vary by region and household; this version uses the form widely known in Japan (Small Straight 15, Large Straight 30, Yacht 50, upper bonus 35). It is also a fine exercise in probability and judgment, so aim for 200 in Solo first, then take on the CPU.
