Sea Battle ― How to Play, Rules, and Tips
Hide five ships on a 10×10 sea, then fire at the enemy sea one square at a time to find theirs. Sea Battle is a classic deduction game that has been played with nothing more than squared paper and a pencil. The rules take a minute to learn, but every game plays out differently as you decide where to fire next after a hit and work out where the remaining ships can still fit. This version is set in a naval operations room with a chart table, and you can play against the CPU or trade shots with friends online.
What you can do in this game
- VS CPU: levels 1 to 10. Choose "Auto" and the level goes up when you win and down when you lose, so you always have a suitable opponent. Your record against each level is saved.
- Rule options: three switches, "Ships may touch", "Near hints", and "Salvo" (explained below).
- Placement: your five ships start in a random layout. Drag to move, tap (click) to rotate, or press "Random" for a new layout.
- Online: play against friends and family anywhere. Private rooms with a passcode are supported.
The screen
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
| Enemy sea | The large sea. Fire at its squares. Misses get an X, hits catch fire, and sunk ships appear where they were |
| Your sea | The small sea, showing your own ships and the enemy's shots |
| Enemy fleet / Your fleet | Which ships are still afloat. Sunk ships are dimmed |
| Shots / Hits | How many shots you have fired and how many hit |
| Buttons | "Resign" on PC. On phones there is also a "Fire" button after you aim. The "?" at the top right opens the rules |
Basic rules
- The sea is a 10×10 grid (columns A to J, rows 1 to 10). Each player hides five ships where the opponent cannot see them.
| Ship | Length |
|---|---|
| Carrier | 5 squares |
| Battleship | 4 squares |
| Cruiser | 3 squares |
| Submarine | 3 squares |
| Destroyer | 2 squares |
- Ships lie in a straight line, horizontally or vertically. They cannot overlap or stick out of the sea.
- A coin toss decides who fires first. Players take turns firing at one square of the enemy sea. You cannot fire at the same square twice.
- Each shot has one of three results: a miss (no ship there), a hit (part of a ship), or sunk (every square of that ship has been hit, and its type is revealed).
- Sink all five enemy ships to win. The game ends as soon as one fleet is destroyed.
- You can resign at any time.
Rule options
- Ships may touch (default on): turn it off and ships must not touch each other, not even diagonally. Since you then know the squares around a sunk ship are empty, deduction gets easier. A good setting for beginners.
- Near hints (default off): on a miss, the game also tells you "Near!" when a ship sits in one of the eight surrounding squares. This comes from a popular pen-and-paper variant and makes games faster.
- Salvo (default off): fire one shot per ship you still have, all in one turn. Losing ships means fewer shots, so an early lead counts for more. For experienced players.
Controls
PC: click a square on the enemy sea to fire.
Phone: tap a square to aim, then tap it again or press "Fire". The two-step aim prevents hitting the wrong square by accident.
On the placement screen, drag a ship to move it and tap (click) it to rotate. Squares where it cannot go are shown in red.
Tips
1. After a hit, fire in a cross
Fire above, below, left, and right of the hit, in turn, to learn which way the ship lies. Once you know the direction, keep firing along that line until it sinks. If one end turns out to be a miss, go back to the other end.
2. Count ship lengths
You learn the length of every ship you sink, so you also know the lengths of those still afloat. If only the carrier (5 squares) is left, it can only fit in a run of five unshot squares. Counting the gaps between your misses tells you which squares are not worth firing at.
3. Search in a checkerboard pattern
The shortest ship, the destroyer, is two squares long. Firing only on the dark squares of a checkerboard is guaranteed to hit it somewhere. With no clues at all, start near the centre of that pattern. Once every remaining ship is three squares or longer, every third square is enough.
4. Two hits in a row can be two ships
When ships touch, two neighbouring hits may belong to different ships. If you keep firing along a line, get a miss, and nothing has sunk, another ship may be lying alongside. Turning "Ships may touch" off removes this confusion.
5. Place your ships to mislead
Good placement works against the opponent's search. Ships along the edges are harder to find with a checkerboard search, and touching ships make the opponent misread directions. Just do not use the same layout every time, or a frequent opponent (or the CPU) will catch on.
6. Test yourself with Auto
At level 1 the CPU rarely follows up on a hit, so complete beginners can win. Higher levels track hits, count ship lengths, and search in patterns more and more accurately. Level 10 sinks a whole fleet in about 45 shots, so you need to search efficiently to keep up.
Playing online
- Choose "Online Play" on the title screen and pick a player name (3 to 12 characters).
- Choose "Create Room" and set the time limit per move (30 or 60 seconds) and the rule options. If time runs out, that turn is passed.
- To play with a friend, make the room private with a passcode and share it. Private rooms can also have no time limit.
- When the opponent joins, each player places their ships and presses "Deploy". The game starts once both fleets are ready. Your layout is never sent to the opponent's device.
- After the game, the enemy layout is revealed. In a rematch the first shot alternates. If the opponent leaves, the remaining player wins.
Sea Battle terms
- Shot: firing at one square of the enemy sea.
- Hit / Miss / Sunk: the result of a shot. A ship sinks when all of its squares have been hit.
- Salvo: originally a volley of guns fired together. Here it means the rule of one shot per remaining ship.
- Checkerboard (parity): alternating squares like a chessboard, the basic pattern for finding short ships efficiently.
A little history
Sea Battle has been played on squared paper since the early 20th century. Players keep their sheets hidden and call out coordinates such as "B7" to search for each other's ships. The number and size of the ships, and extra answers such as "near", varied from place to place and family to family. This game uses the most widely played setup, ten by ten with five ships, and offers the "near" hint as an option.
