Mini Golf ― How to Play, Rules, and Tips
Drag to putt, and sink the ball in as few strokes as you can. Mini golf is a classic you can learn in a minute, even if you have never played golf. Bank the ball off a wall, climb a slope, skirt a pond, slip through a tunnel: every hole has its own feature to read, and nothing beats the feeling of a putt that rolls exactly where you planned. This version is set in a park putting course. Chase your best score alone, take turns on one device, or play against the CPU and friends online.
What you can do in this game
- Solo: pick a course and play 9 holes. Your best score for each course is saved.
- Pass & Play: 2 to 4 people take turns on one device, one putt each. Balls never collide with other players' balls.
- VS CPU: 1 to 3 CPU players. Levels 1 to 10, or "Auto", which goes up when you win and down when you lose. Your record is kept.
- Online: 2 to 4 players. Empty seats are filled by the CPU, so you can start right away even on your own. Private rooms with a passcode are supported.
- Two courses, 18 holes: the Starter Course (par 24) introduces walls, slopes and bumpers one at a time. The Challenge Course (par 31) combines water, sand, tunnels and moving walls.
The screen
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
| The hole | A grass fairway framed by wooden rails. The white ball is yours, and the hole with the flag is the cup |
| Hole and par | Top left (top on phones): "Hole 3/9" and "Par 3" |
| Strokes and total | Your strokes on this hole, and your total for finished holes with the difference to par. In a match, one row per player |
| Guide | While you drag, a direction line appears. It turns red as the power rises, and the first bounce off a wall is shown in yellow |
| Buttons | "Give Up" (ends the hole at par + 4) and "Back to Title". The "?" at the top right opens the rules |
Basic rules
- Putt from the tee. The number of strokes it takes to sink the ball is your score for the hole. Wait until the ball stops before the next putt.
- A course has 9 holes. Each hole has a par (the target number of strokes, 2 to 4). The lowest total over 9 holes wins.
- When you reach par + 4 strokes, the hole ends with that score and you move on. Giving up also counts as par + 4.
- Water costs one penalty stroke, and the ball returns to where you putted from.
- The ball only drops into the cup when it is rolling slowly. Too fast and it rolls right over.
Score terms
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Hole-in-one | Holed in a single stroke |
| Eagle | Two under par |
| Birdie | One under par |
| Par | The target score |
| Bogey | One over par |
| Double bogey | Two over par |
Course features
- Walls: the ball bounces off them. Hit a wall at an angle to reach a cup around a corner.
- Bumpers: round posts that bounce the ball back harder than a wall. Avoid them, or use them.
- Slopes: the ball rolls in the arrow direction. A weak putt up a slope rolls back down.
- Sand: slows the ball down a lot. Sometimes useful when you want it to stop short of the cup.
- Water: one penalty stroke and the ball goes back. Aim for the bridge or the edge.
- Tunnels: enter the mouth (stone rim) and the ball comes out of the exit (metal grate) in a fixed direction. A shortcut on some holes, a trap on others.
- Moving walls: they slide back and forth. Wait for the gap.
Controls
PC: drag and release to putt. The ball goes the opposite way to the drag, and the drag length sets the power. You can start the drag anywhere on the screen, so it works even when the ball sits against a wall.
Phone: the same. Only the direction and length of the drag matter, so you can drag wherever is easiest to see.
The yellow guide line shows where the ball will go after the first wall it hits. Later bounces and slopes are not included.
Tips
1. Judge the power by the distance to the cup
A white guide line means a gentle putt, and it turns red as the power rises. Near the cup, a line reaching just past the ball is plenty. Too hard and the ball skips over the cup and bounces away.
2. Walls are your friends
When the cup is around a corner, hit the wall just before the corner at an angle and you can get close in one putt. Watch the yellow bounce line and adjust where on the wall you hit.
3. Climb slopes with momentum, stop with sand
A ball that stalls on an upward slope rolls back, so putt harder than the slope looks. On holes with sand in front of the cup, you can either stop in the sand and putt from there, or play one strong putt that clears it.
4. Water and moving walls: wait, or go around
Do not force a shot over water. Taking the bridge or the side costs a stroke at most, with no penalty. Putt right after a moving wall passes and you have plenty of room.
5. Look at the tunnel exit first
Each tunnel has its own exit and exit direction. Before you enter one, check whether it brings you closer to the cup or sends you away.
6. Test yourself with Auto
The CPU picks its shots by actually rolling candidate putts, so it uses walls and slopes properly. Lower levels aim loosely, higher levels aim precisely. Start with "Auto" and the level rises when you win and falls when you lose, so you always get a fair match.
Playing online
- Choose "Online Play" on the title screen and pick a player name (3 to 12 characters).
- Choose "Create Room" and set the number of players (2 to 4), the course, and the time per putt (30 or 60 seconds). Make the room private with a passcode to invite friends only (no time limit is available there).
- The room owner can start right away, even alone. Empty seats are filled by the CPU.
- Anyone who joins during a game waits in the room and plays from the next game.
- If time runs out, the CPU putts for you. If someone leaves, the CPU takes over their seat. The first player alternates in a rematch.
A little history
Mini golf spread in the early 20th century as a way to enjoy just the putting part of golf on a small course. Windmills, slopes and tunnels add reading and technique to a simple goal: get the ball in with as few strokes as possible. This game follows the same idea, with one highlight feature on every hole. If it feels hard, start on the Starter Course and look for the holes where a hole-in-one is within reach.
