Shogi ― How to Play, Rules, and Tips to Improve
Checkmate the enemy King and you win. What makes Shogi, or Japanese chess, special is that captured pieces become yours to use. In this version, the squares a piece can move to light up, so you can play comfortably even if you have only just learned how the pieces move.
What you can do in this game
- Play against the CPU: levels 1 to 10. Choose "Auto" and the level goes up when you win and down when you lose, so you always get a well-matched opponent.
- Handicap games: give yourself an advantage by removing some of the CPU's pieces, from a single Lance up to ten pieces.
- Two players: take turns on one screen.
- Online play: play with friends or family who are far away. Private rooms with a passphrase and handicap games are supported.
- Game record and resume: you can review the moves played so far. The game is saved automatically after every move, so you can stop at any time and continue later with "Resume" on the title screen.
Basic rules
- The board is 9 × 9. The two players take turns making one move at a time.
- Click (tap) a piece and the squares it can move to light up. Choose one of them to move.
- Moving onto a square with an enemy piece captures it. Captured pieces go to your hand, and on your turn you can "drop" one onto any empty square instead of moving.
- A piece may promote when it moves into, within, or out of the promotion zone (the three rows on the opponent's side).
- You win by checkmate: the enemy King is attacked and cannot escape capture on the next move.
How the pieces move
| Piece | Movement | When promoted |
|---|---|---|
| King | One square in any direction | Cannot promote |
| Rook | Any distance along a row or column | Dragon: adds one square diagonally |
| Bishop | Any distance diagonally | Horse: adds one square along a row or column |
| Gold | One square, except diagonally backward | Cannot promote |
| Silver | One square forward or in any diagonal direction | Moves like a Gold |
| Knight | Jumps two forward and one to the side (it can jump over pieces) | Moves like a Gold |
| Lance | Any distance straight forward | Moves like a Gold |
| Pawn | One square forward | Tokin: moves like a Gold |
Unlike in chess, a Pawn captures the same way it moves: straight ahead.
Illegal moves
Shogi has several illegal moves, but in this game you simply cannot play them. There is no risk of losing by making an illegal move you did not know about.
- Two Pawns (nifu): having two of your unpromoted Pawns on the same column.
- Pawn-drop mate: giving checkmate by dropping a Pawn.
- A piece with no moves: dropping or moving a Pawn, Lance, or Knight to a square from which it could never move again.
If the same position occurs four times, the game is a draw by repetition. However, if one side caused the repetition by checking continuously, that side loses.
Tips to improve
1. Build a castle for your King first
A King left on its starting square is in danger as soon as the attack begins. Learn to "castle": gather Golds and Silvers next to your King to form a defensive shape. You will immediately become much harder to beat. As a first goal, move your King to one side and surround it with two Golds and a Silver.
2. Put your Rook and Bishop to work
The Rook and the Bishop are powerful pieces that reach across the whole board, but they can do nothing while your own Pawns block them. The basic opening idea is to advance the Pawn in front of your Rook and the Pawn diagonally in front of your Bishop to open their paths.
3. Count material
Captured pieces join your army. Winning a Silver for a Pawn is a big gain. Giving up a Rook for a Silver is a loss. After every exchange, ask yourself who came out ahead. As a rough guide: Pawn < Lance < Knight < Silver < Gold < Bishop < Rook.
4. Save your drops for the right moment
A piece in hand can be dropped anywhere, so it can suddenly appear at the weak point of the enemy defense. In the endgame, dropping a Gold or Silver near the King is especially strong. As the saying goes, "wrap the King up": look for squares that cut off its escape.
5. Use handicaps and "Auto"
It is often said that you improve faster by playing close handicap games than by losing even games to a stronger opponent. If you raise the CPU level and can no longer win, step back one level or try a handicap. Using "Undo" to take back a move and try a different one is also good practice.
How to play online
- Choose "Online Play" on the title screen and pick a player name (3-12 characters).
- Choose "Create Room", then set the time limit per move (30 or 60 seconds) and whether to play a handicap game.
- To play with a friend, make the room private, set a passphrase, and share it. Private rooms can also be played with no time limit.
- The game starts when your opponent joins. The players swap sides for a rematch.
A little history
Shogi is said to descend from Chaturanga, a game of ancient India. The branch that traveled west became chess, and the branch that traveled east became Shogi. Pieces found by archaeologists show that the game had already reached Japan by the Heian period, around a thousand years ago. The rule that lets you reuse captured pieces is rare among the world's chess games. Because of it, the armies never shrink, and fierce attacks continue right up to the end.
