Gunjin Shogi ― How to Play, Rules, and Tips to Win
Every enemy piece is face down. You do not know which one is the General and which one is a Mine, so you attack, deduce, and push toward the enemy Headquarters. Gunjin Shogi ("military chess") is a classic Japanese game of luck, reading, and nerve, and it will feel familiar if you have played Stratego. The game normally needs a referee to judge each battle. Here the computer is the referee, so two players, or even one, can play.
What you can do in this game
- Play against the CPU: three strengths, Easy, Normal, and Hard. Your record is kept for each strength.
- Online play: play with friends or family who are far away. Private rooms with a passphrase are supported.
- Save your formation: store a setup you like and load it instantly in your next game.
How to win
You win by doing either of the following.
- Move a general or field officer (General down to Major) into the enemy Headquarters.
- Eliminate every enemy piece that can move.
If the same position occurs three times, the game is a draw by repetition.
How the game flows
- First, place your 23 pieces in your own territory. If you are not sure, "Auto Deploy" arranges them for you.
- Players take turns moving one piece at a time.
- Moving onto a square occupied by an enemy piece starts a battle, and the loser is removed from the board. Two pieces of the same type trade, and both are removed.
- Enemy pieces stay face down for the whole game. Even when a piece is removed, only its owner knows what it was.
You can enter enemy territory only through the "ENTRY" squares (the Plane is the exception and can cross anywhere). The wide square at the center of each back row is the Headquarters.
How the pieces move
Every piece basically moves one square forward, backward, left, or right. These pieces are special.
| Piece | Movement |
|---|---|
| Cavalry, Tank | May also move two squares forward |
| Engineer | Any number of squares in a straight line |
| Plane | Any number of squares forward or backward, and may jump over pieces |
| Mine, Flag | Cannot move |
Piece strengths
Among ranked pieces, the higher rank wins.
General > Lt. General > Maj. General > Colonel > Lt. Colonel > Major > Captain > 1st Lieutenant > 2nd Lieutenant
Special pieces follow their own rules.
| Piece | Wins and losses |
|---|---|
| Spy | Beats only the General. Loses to everything else |
| Plane | Loses only to the three generals. Beats everything else |
| Tank | Loses to the generals, the Plane, and the Engineer. Beats the rest |
| Engineer | Beats the Tank and the Spy, and removes Mines. Loses to the rest |
| Cavalry | Beats only the Spy and the Engineer |
| Mine | Removed by the Engineer and the Plane. Any other piece that steps on it trades with it |
| Flag | Fights with the strength of the friendly piece directly behind it. If it loses, only the Flag is removed |
You can check every matchup in the win/loss table, opened from the "?" button in the game.
Tips to win
1. Protect your General, and fear the Spy
The General is the strongest piece, but it loses to the Spy. Keep throwing your General at unknown pieces and sooner or later you will hit the Spy. Save the General for the key moment, after you have a good idea of what the enemy pieces are.
2. Put a strong piece behind your Flag
The Flag fights with the strength of the piece directly behind it. With the General or Lt. General behind it, the Flag becomes a powerful wall. A Flag with nothing behind it is the weakest piece on the board.
3. Do not pile Mines around your Headquarters
Mines cannot move, so their positions are easy to guess. If you line them up right in front of your Headquarters, an Engineer or a Plane removes them and the road is suddenly open. Mines work best where the enemy wants to pass, such as near the ENTRY squares.
4. Deduce enemy pieces from battle results
If your Major loses, the enemy piece is a Lt. Colonel or higher, a Plane, or a Tank. If your Plane loses, the enemy piece is one of the generals. Remember each result and the face-down pieces slowly reveal themselves. Movement is a big clue too: a piece that moved two squares, jumped over another, or never moves at all.
5. Take good care of your Planes and Engineers
A Plane can enter enemy territory from anywhere and beats everything except the generals. Engineers are the precious pieces that can remove Mines. Lose them early and you will lack breakthrough power in the endgame.
How to play online
- Choose "Online Play" on the title screen and pick a player name (3-12 characters).
- Choose "Create Room" and set the time limit per move (20, 30, or 40 seconds).
- To play with a friend, make the room private, set a passphrase, and share it. Private rooms can also be played with no time limit.
- The game starts when both players finish their setup. In rooms with a time limit, setup is timed as well, and an automatic formation is used if time runs out.
A little history
Gunjin Shogi is said to have been born in Japan around the end of the Meiji era, in the early twentieth century. Also called "Kogun Shogi", it was widely played by children through the Showa era. Fighting with hidden pieces while a referee announces only the result is very similar to the Western game Stratego. There are many variants with different numbers of pieces and board shapes. This game uses the 23-piece version.
