Billiards (Nine-Ball) ― How to Play, Rules, and Tips to Improve
Drag, then release. This is casual nine-ball pool where you shoot the cue ball as if pulling back a slingshot. The controls are simple, but collisions and rolling are simulated with physics, so a shot that goes exactly where you aimed feels just right.
What you can do in this game
- Practice: play alone and try to pocket all nine balls in as few shots as possible. Ideal for getting used to the controls.
- VS CPU: levels 1 to 10. Choose "Auto" and the level adjusts to your wins and losses.
- Two Players: take turns on one screen.
- Online Play: play with friends or family who are far away. Private rooms with a passphrase are supported.
Nine-ball rules
- The game uses nine object balls, numbered 1 to 9, and the white cue ball.
- The player who pockets the 9 ball wins.
- The cue ball must always hit the lowest-numbered ball on the table first. The ball you need to hit next is shown at the top of the screen.
- As long as you hit the lowest ball first, any ball may drop. If that ball knocks the 9 into a pocket, you win on the spot.
- If you pocket a ball, you shoot again. If you do not, it is your opponent's turn.
Controls
- Drag anywhere on the table and release to shoot. The cue ball travels in the opposite direction of your drag.
- The farther you pull, the harder the shot.
- With "Spin", choose Follow (the cue ball keeps rolling forward after contact), Draw (it comes back toward you), or None.
- The aiming guide can be turned on or off in the match settings.
Fouls and ball in hand
The following are fouls. After a foul, your opponent gets "ball in hand": they may place the cue ball anywhere on the table before shooting.
| Foul | What happened |
|---|---|
| Scratch | The cue ball dropped into a pocket |
| Wrong ball | The cue ball hit another ball before the lowest-numbered one |
| No hit | The cue ball touched no ball at all |
| Time up | (Online only) No shot was made within the time limit |
If the 9 ball is pocketed on a foul, it is put back on the table and play continues.
Tips to improve
1. Do not shoot too hard
Hit with full power and you lose control of where the cue ball goes, and scratches become more likely. Shoot just hard enough for the object ball to reach the pocket. The cue ball will stop nearby and your next shot will be easier.
2. Think one ball ahead
In nine-ball you hit the balls in numerical order. Do not just pocket the current ball. Think about where the cue ball should stop so that the next number is easy to hit. This is called position play, and the better the player, the more time they spend on it.
3. Use Follow and Draw
With no spin, the cue ball stops near the contact point or drifts sideways after hitting the object ball. Use Follow when you want it to travel farther forward, and Draw when you want it to come back. A simple rule: if the next ball is on your side, draw; if it is on the far side, follow.
4. Play safe when there is no shot
Forcing a shot that is not there often ends in a foul, and that hands your opponent ball in hand. A "safety" is a perfectly good plan: tap the lowest ball lightly and leave the cue ball where your opponent has no easy shot.
5. Watch for a chance at the 9
When the 9 ball sits just beyond the lowest-numbered ball, you can win at once with a combination: drive the lowest ball into the 9 and pocket it. Always keep an eye on where the 9 is.
How to play online
- Choose "Online Play" on the title screen and pick a player name (3-12 characters).
- Choose "Create Room" and set the time limit per shot (30 or 60 seconds).
- To play with a friend, make the room private, set a passphrase, and share it. Private rooms can also be played with no time limit.
- The game starts when your opponent joins. The player who shoots first is swapped for a rematch.
A little history
Nine-ball was born in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. It is fast, and a comeback is always possible until the 9 ball finally drops. In Japan the game boomed in the 1980s after a hit movie, and pool halls appeared all over town. The cue ball is white so that it is easy to tell apart from the others. Balls 1 to 8 are solid colors, and the 9 ball is white with a yellow stripe.
